The Ghaf Art Gallery is preparing an exhibition themed around the F1 Grand Prix races.

The Exhibition will take place in November and will coincide with the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix race that takes place from 11th-13th November 2011.

We invite artists based in the UAE to come up with a minimum of one work, in any medium, no larger than 100 cm X 100 cm, which would be exhibited for sale.

Participation Conditions:

Juried group exhibition
The Standard Gallery Commission of 40% (on top of the Artist Price) will be calculated to form the Retail (Selling) Price.
Chosen artists will pay 500Dhs participation fee.
Deadline to submit artwork is 31st October 2011.
Artwork must be exhibition ready.
Artwork size cannot exceed 100cm x100cm.
Participating artists must provide the gallery with hi-resolution jpegs of the artwork, artist biography and artist photograph.
Artists are responsible to collect unsold artwork within one week from the completion of the exhibition; artworks remaining beyond this time will be subject to AED 100 per day storage fee.
The gallery is not responsible for the delivery and pick up of any artworks.

Abu Dhabi Airports Formula 1 Race Car ProjectAbu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) is currently accepting applications for artists to participate in an ongoing project coinciding with F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (2011). A maximum of three artists will be selected and given creative freedom to design an F1 wire car which will be featured in advertising campaigns as well as an exhibition. The application is open to all UAE artists.The Formula One Car Contender: is a full scale replica of a Formula One race car, it is made out of wires and can be assembled easily according to the design of the artist. Muslims and Arabs are among those who have been overshadowed by generalizations that are mostly inaccurate assumptions. There is no one to blame, but we owe it to ourselves and to the world to raise those stereotypes and project the true essence of who we are, how we live, and what we stand for.Art is a form of expression, a unified language. Art is a message delivered in a creative manner.Express yourself. Break the stereotype.

Mansoor Bin Mohammed Photography Award

Objective:
The Award in its second edition aims at run the largest photographic campaign within the UAE through encouraging professional and talented photographers to take pictures, collect and document all forms of life in the civil society of the UAE in the cities, villages and different parts of the country.

Award Categories:
Main Category (Emirates Neighborhoods):
The main theme focus of the ‘Furjan Al Emarat’ campaign is to highlight the details of UAE neighborhoods. All applicants who wish to apply for the main category they shall provide sequential snapshots (portfolio) which should include an accurate description of the urban areas where they lived or their environmental surroundings such as cities, villages, houses, buildings or network of corridors as well as sidewalks, roads and other landmarks. The photographs should be submitted as a package to give an accurate impression to the viewer about the nature of the place, home of the photographer.

Sub-categories:
The sub-categories of the Award will also focus on the neighborhood with a difference that photos shall be submitted individually and each photo shall include a single image for each category of the five categories:
1. Districts
2. Houses
3. Roads
4. Fields
5. Landmarks

Terms and conditions:
1. Applicants shall be either from UAE nationality or UAE residents.
2. Photographs shall be taken within the UAE with an accurate description of the location and the date of the photo.
3. Image format: JPEG with a minimum resolution 300 dpi.
4. Photographs shall not have been applied in the previous year of the Award or any other awards.
5. The applicant undertakes ownership of the photos submitted, and not to grant rights to any other party.
6. The applicant shall have full responsibility for any legal accountability to the images.
7. The applicant is not authorized to withdraw any applied documents as long as they were submitted.
8. The Award is authorized to use and disseminate the applicants’ works as well as display them in the Award’s events with retaining the right moral.
9. The applicant may subscribe with more than one photo and less than 10 photos in the main category, and not more than a photo of each sup-category.

How to apply:

2. Activating the account through e-mail.
3. In case of applying online, materials shall be uploaded directly from the registered account, however in case of hand-delivered materials, they shall be submitted as CDs with the required documents to the headquarters of the Award in the Emirate of Dubai (Business Center Tower, Office 2101 A, Dubai Media City, UAE, Tel: +971501000323).
4. The Award will start receiving applications from January 15th, 2011 till April 15th, 2011.

An exhibition dedicated to present works of art by Emirati artists representing their home, the United Arab Emirates.

The United Arab Emirates is a country with a rich history and a great present. This exhibition is brought to you by the youth of this country. The presented works of art will be representations of the UAE from their viewpoint; a representation of what is home to them and what intrigues them. Each artist will use his/her unique form of expression to deliver their perspective of their home country. The end result; a collection of beautiful imagery and color reflecting the United Arab Emirates in the eyes of its people.

Complimenting this exhibition, information sessions will be held at The Ara Gallery during the period of the exhibition focused on overall Emirati cultural awareness and understanding. These sessions will be aimed at familiarizing tourists and expatriates with our traditions, culture, and overall lifestyle in the past and present. Coupled with the artwork displayed, guests will be able to truly experience the Emirati culture through the unified language of art and through talks and discussions on the people of the UAE and their culture.

Participating artists can take an active part in this initiative by attending some of the sessions and meeting with guests personally, thereby allowing for a dynamic exchange of thoughts, knowledge, and awareness.

Dear Art Lovers

Jalal’s Art Trip is Jalal Luqman's initiative to give back to the community, by sponsoring 10-15 amateur artists by giving them that push to cross over to become professional artists.

Since its conception, Jalal’s Art Trip has as taken its students to Hatta, Margham, Jazirat Al Hamra and Sir Banyas Island. Many of my participants have gone on to become professional artists or professionals in the art and culture field, supporting our national initiative to become an art and culture capital on a global scale.

This year, Jalal’s Art trip 2011 takes its participants to the bottom of our Emirati Sea, to witness the beauty and inspiration of our magical underwater world. “Inspirations from the Deep” is the theme of his year’s JAT; this will give the artists the ability to portray the mysteries of the deep as well as possible indications to our environment and how to preserve it.

“Jalal’s Art Trip”, from concept to completion, is the brainchild of the Emirati artist Jalal Luqman. The project stems from his desire to promote art in Abu Dhabi by giving the opportunity to emerging artists in the Middle East to have an exhibition. In order to facilitate this, Jalal Luqman initiated an annual event called ‘Jalal’s Art Trip’, during which a select few artists resident in the U.A.E. would go to a location or two to ignite inspiration. The trip is only open to emerging artists who had not yet held an exhibition and needed push and encouragement to establish themselves in the art world. After the trip, over the next five to six weeks the artists are required to create works of art inspired solely by their individual experiences on the trip. The whole trip and every subsequent meeting are filmed, to document 'The Process' that is involved in creating an artwork, from the point of inspiration to the framing and exhibition of work and all that comes in between. This is done to foster a deeper understanding between the artists and the public. A small video of ‘The Process’ will be shown on the exhibition opening night.

Daman Investments & Tashkeel are sending out a call all Emarati photographers to submit work for inclusion in the DAMAN 2011 calendar.

This year, Daman Investments takes pleasure in collaborating with Tashkeel on the 2011 calendar that will feature a selection of photographs by Emarati photographers.

The theme for this year’s calendar is the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the United Arab Emirates as a growing nation. Submitted images should represent what ‘UAE turning 40’ means to them.

ADACH welcomes applications for heritage competitions to be held at hunting show

WAM Abu Dhabi, 26th July 2010 (WAM): The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) announced today that it has begun receiving applications for contests and competitions to be held at the International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition- Abu Dhabi 2010 (ADIHEX). The exhibition, which takes place from September 22-25, is being held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's representative in Al Gharbia (the Western Region) of Abu Dhabi, and President of the Emirati Falconers Club (EFC), with support from ADACH.

Competitions at the eighth edition of ADIHEX 2010 include a traditional coffee brewing competition, Nabaty poetry competition, which describes loss of birds and description of hunting known locally as "miqnas", a contest for best painting and photograph in hunting, equestrian and heritage as well as a Saluki beauty contest.

"The specialized contests within the exhibition creates an ideal setting for interaction among people interested in hunting, equestrian and heritage, in addition to providing the opportunity to witness tremendous heritage and authenticity of our Arab nobility," said Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Director of ADIHEX 2010 and Director of Communication Department at ADACH.

Al Qubasi noted that previous editions of competitions held at the exhibition witnessed strong participation from both nationals and visitors from the GCC, as well as internationally. "We are committed to the inclusion of competitions as it adds to the vitality of the exhibition, and is consistent with the vision of the event which is preservation of cultural heritage and promotion of sustainable hunting." Arab coffee brewing competition: The Arab coffee brewing competition represents the art of preparing Arabic coffee. Deeply engrained in the inherent heritage of the Arab world, coffee brewing and its related traditions are a mark of hospitality and generosity. Besides, coffee is also linked to late night Bedouin gatherings, which seek to revitalize oral and poetic heritage of the region.

Nabaty poetry: The best Nabaty poetry competition within the category of bird description, loss and the description of "miqnas" has been a popular and integral part of previous editions of ADIHEX. Nabaty poetry, which is closely associated with the cultural history of the UAE and the rest of the Gulf, witnesses wide participation from local and Gulf poets every year.

The organizers will appoint a jury committee comprising of leading lights in Nabaty and other traditional forms of poetry, to adjudicate winners in this competition. The jury committee will conduct a thorough analysis of the poetry being presented by participants. The aesthetic structure of the poem in terms of language, rhyming and philosophical influences as well as expressions about "miqnas," the relationship between the hunter and his falcon, and the grief of losing one's birds will be taken into consideration.

The best art painting competition: The best art painting competition of the ADIHEX 2010 represents an overview on the fine arts, addressing a heritage theme through a variety of techniques and methods including photographs and impressionist portraits. Arab life in the desert has always been an attraction to artists whether they were international, Middle-Eastern or Arabs. This competition pays a tribute to traditional fine arts, reflecting and documenting the lives of Bedouins in the past centuries.

Saluki beauty championship: The Arabian Saluki center that was established in the year 2001, with the support of the Emirati Falconers' Club, will organize a saluki beauty championship, giving Arabian saluki owners the opportunity to showcase their precious hounds - both smooth and feathered, on an international show level.

The contest will be judged by a specialized committee that includes jury members of local and international Saluki competitions. The adjudication will be based on basic standards of the breed, such as the head, the overall structure, cover skin, movements and general impression. The winners of the Arabian saluki beauty championship will receive valuable prizes, including cash rewards.

All Saluki owners based in the United Arab Emirates and other GCC countries are requested to register their Arabian Saluki with the Arabian Saluki Centre prior to the exhibition. Arabian Salukis that are not registered by the Arabian Saluki Center will not be allowed to enter the competition.

Exhibition Title: express your self in 30" X 30"
Exhibition Venue: Ghaf Art Gallery - Abu Dhabi
Exhibition Date: 9th - 24th of June 2010
Exhibition Type: open call, national and international artists.
Curator: Sumayyah Al Suwaidi

Express your self in 30"X30" is an open call art exhibition for national and international artists. All forms of art will be accepted as long as it can be hung.

Submissions start 2nd of March 2010 - submissions end 31st of may 2010
Entrance fee 150 Dollars
Submit a word document with your details and address + samples of the artworks with title, medium and retail price + 1 high resolution image, 300 dpi, jpg format.
You may submit up to 5 artworks
Gallery takes 20% commission of sales
Artworks submitted must be ready to hang
Artworks if framed, the color must be black
Artworks must not exceed 30" X 30" with frame
Artworks submitted after the deadline will be rejected.
Artworks must be at the gallery maximum by the 7th of June

Open Call For Emirati Artists

Opening Ceremony: Thursday, March 4th 2010

Any area artists are invited to display their work during the festival. There will be no fee to hang the art, and they may choose to sell the work and keep the profits if they would like. Both male and female artists are invited to show their art, but only women may attend the festival. Men may create a biography and artist statement to accompany their work.

Dear Emirati Artists,

The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority is proud to announce a public art initiative that will bring together Emirati artists to express national identity, culture and vision.

As the first initiative of its kind, Dubai Culture aims to showcase artwork by a diverse range of artists from leading pioneers to upcoming fresh talents during Art Dubai in March 2010.
The artworks will be displayed on large billboards strategically placed around the city, as a way to bring art to the public, beautify the city and promote local art.

We invite you to contribute to this initiative by submitting artwork that represent
the theme of identity and the UAE’s culture.

Submission guidelines:
You can participate with new or existing work
Size of Artwork must be 385cm x 250cm

Format:
For digital works: Adobe illustrator file (ai) and adobe Photoshop (psd)
For non Digital artworks paintings etc): please provide a high quality can/
photograph as per requirements above.

Deadline: 8th February 2010

Mutahida Competition & Art Exhibition

To celebrate the UAE's National Day watani, with emirates fine arts society and tashkeel gallery organized a national day competition & exhibition under the word mutahida wich means unity. whatever the artists and students submitted had to revolve around unity, the unity of the 7 emirates and it had to represent the UAE in general.

the exhibition started on the 26th of november and will end on the 5th of december also it's going to be the day watani announces the 3 winners at Dubai Mall.

Even before she knew the meaning of words, Noor al Suwaidi could form the shape of letters in English and Arabic. As a very young child she would spend hours tracing the patterns from greeting cards sent to her parents and copying the intricate curves of the letters. Drawing was her passion.

As she grew, this love matured into a deep appreciation for all forms of art, which has led her to where she is today – a respected artist with ambitions to become a curator promoting the artwork of her homeland.Like most young Emiratis, Miss al Suwaidi, 28, has seen many changes over the past 20 years. In the art world, in particular, there has been a transformation.“Even four years ago when I said I was an artist people thought I would come and paint the walls in their house... or perhaps do pencil drawings for children’s books. But now things are very different. People ask questions. They are genuinely interested.”

An Idea, what do you think

In the past year or two it has become very clear how some people/ agencies/ departments have been showing some interest in young Emirati artists, which on the outside looks like a really good thing.
But then I dig deeper into this seemingly Nice thing and find it to be a little devious below the surface.

I sat many times with a slight smile on my face, thinking of this trying to have a positive outlook on things, but cannot seem to shrug off this feeling that these young artist are being pursued (in most cases, not all cases) not because they are good, or because the person hiring them to do the project is supporting the UAE's move to improve art in this country, in fact I feel that it is purely because they are less demanding than the older ones, and they lack the business intelligence to know what is a binding contract from a simple MOU, to a scam.

So I was thinking it might be a good thing to gather together a group of veteran artists as well as experts in the field, and a lawyer or legal advisor.
Invite these young emerging artist as well as all Emirati artists young and small to educate them about the things they should be aware of in their Artistic journey.
